In a perfect world in which the college football season goes off on time, Sunday, June 14 marks 81 days until NC State’s season and ACC opener against Louisville, a Thursday night road game that will likely be nationally televised.

Each day, The Wolfpacker will do a countdown to the season with a reflection on the significance of that number to NC State.

#81- Torry Holt

Considered the greatest wide receiver in NC State football history, who else but Torry Holt could represent #81 in our countdown to Wolfpack football?

After finishing his four-year career in Raleigh in 1998, Holt still holds almost every receiving record in school history.

Torry Holt's receiving records at NC State:

-Career receiving yards (3,379)

-Single season receiving yards (1,604 in 1998)

-Receiving yards in a single game (255 vs Baylor in 1998, also holds second place with 225 vs Clemson in 1998)

-Career receiving touchdowns (31)

-Single season receiving touchdowns (16 in 1997)

-Receiving touchdowns in a single game (5 vs Florida State in 1997, also holds second place with four touchdowns vs Clemson in 1998)

-Single season receptions (88 in 1998)

-Receptions in a single game (15 in 1998)

Holt also set the record for career receptions at the conclusion of his college career but was since passed by Jerricho Cotchery in 2003 and once again by the current record-holder, Jaylen Samuels, in 2017.

As the all-time receiving yards leader in school history by more than 200 yards, Holt averaged an astounding 17.7 yards per catch during his four-year career in Raleigh.

Holt was named the ACC Player of the Year in 1998 and had his number 81 jersey retired at Carter-Finley Stadium in 1999.

The NC State legend would go on to lead the NFL in receiving yards in two separate seasons, 2000 and 2003, and won a Super Bowl with the St. Louis Rams in 2000.
