The 6-3, 205-pound defensive back out of Hargrave Military Academy committed to NC State on Nov. 14 when Chuck Amato was still the NC State coach, but Hargrave coach Robert Prunty said the firing of Amato and subsequent hiring of Tom O'Brien hadn't affected his thoughts on NC State.
"He's still very solid," Prunty said. "He's definitely coming. He loves NC State. He'll enroll in January."
Simmons played this fall at Hargrave after finishing his career at New Hanover High School in Wilmington, N.C, where he was an all-conference receiver. At Hargrave he set his focus on the defensive side of the ball, proving he could play both cornerback and safety. Last summer he played in the East-West All-Star Game in Greensboro, N.C., where he started for the East team.
Before choosing NC State Simmons had received a scholarship offer from Southern Mississippi and also had the attention of Connecticut, Marshall and Wake Forest, where his father played for the Demon Deacons. Simmons is also the nephew of former Philadelphia Eagles star Clyde Simmons.
Simmons had told Rivals.com that he was happy with his choice to go to NC State not only because of the football program, but also because of his academic future.
"When I see them play I like the intensity they have on the field," he said. "I really think they can use me. I also feel really good about the school. I especially like the business management major they have there."
Simmons hasn't yet talked to new Wolfpack coach O'Brien, but he expects to hear from him soon. Simmons was teammates with another Wolfpack commit, George Bryan, at New Hanover. Bryan, a 6-6, 250-pound tight end told the The Wolfpacker on Monday that he would take a visit to Clemson.
