A potentially busy week for NC State football recruiting got off to a good start when three-star running back Jamious Griffin from Rome (Ga.) High verbally committed Monday over offers from, among others, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Ole Miss, Purdue, South Carolina, Wake Forest and West Virginia.
The 5-foot-10, 205-pounder rushed 201 times for 1,443 yards and 25 touchdowns as a sophomore and then followed that up by adding 178 carries for 1,276 yards and 28 more scores last fall for powerhouse Rome, which has won back-to-back Class AAAAA state titles in Georgia with undefeated 15-0 records. He also caught 13 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown in 2017.
His older brother Ja'Quon Griffin will be a true freshman defensive tackle at Georgia Tech this fall, and another brother, Jaylen Griffin, is a redshirt freshman linebacker at Virginia Tech.
Rivals.com ranks Griffin the No. 55 rising senior in Georgia and the No. 42 running back nationally. Griffin visited NC State for the spring game April 7 and last week had announced a top five that included the Wolfpack, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, Purdue and Cincinnati.
Griffin is NC State's second commitment in less than a week. Three-star linebacker Jaylon Scott from Shelby (N.C.) High selected the Pack over Duke last week after earlier picking up offers from Clemson, Colorado, Maryland, Syracuse and West Virginia. Scott is ranked the No. outside linebacker nationally in the 2019 class by Rivals.com.
Overall NCSU has five verbal pledges, and Griffin is the first from outside of the state of North Carolina. Two more prospects seriously considering NC State are expected to announce decisions Friday — three-star tight end Luke Deal from Emerald High in Greenwood, S.C., and three-star offensive guard Jamari Williams from Cardinal Gibbons High in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Deal made official visits to NC State, Auburn, Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State in the spring, and nearby Clemson is also in the mix. Williams camped at NC State last summer and returned for a junior day in February. He is also looking at Louisville, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Pitt, among others.
