If NC State Wolfpack football's season gets off on time, it will begin a day earlier than originally anticipated.
Brett McMurphy of TheStadium.com is reporting Monday morning that the NC State at Louisville contest will be moved to Wednesday, Sept. 2, a day earlier than first scheduled, to avoid further conflicts with the Kentucky Derby scheduled for that Saturday.
The schools later confirmed the change, with NC State noting that the Thursday of Derby week has become known as "Thurby," a traditionally highly attended event. Churchill Downs, the horse racing track, and Louisville's Cardinal Stadium are neighbors, hence the potential conflicts.
Louisville radio/TV host Lachan McLean had tweeted last week that there were rumors of the move coming, especially after Kentucky moved its opener against Eastern Michigan to the Thursday, Sept. 3 so that it would not compete with the Derby.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kentucky Derby was postponed from the first Saturday of May till the Saturday before Labor Day. Provided everything goes off as planned, The Wolfpacker earlier assembled a to-do list to enjoy the weekend in Louisville.
There is no word on television or kickoff time yet although it is expected to be on primetime and nationally broadcasted.
