NC State may have finished its pursuit of defensive linemen in the 2017 class by landing a verbal commitment from one-time Purdue commitment Dante Johnson from Apopka (Fla.) Wekiva High.
He had confirmed the pending announcement, which was made Wednesday afternoon, to The Wolfpacker on Tuesday evening
Johnson had picked Purdue on Jan. 15 while wrapping up an official visit to the Big Ten school, but a day after returning home to Apopka, NC State gave him a scholarship offer. Johnson, 6-foot-4, 255 pounds, quietly made an official visit to NCSU this past weekend and announced his decommitment from Purdue on Tuesday evening.
Johnson, who had also picked up offers from Iowa State, Temple, Tulane and Central Florida, is NC State’s 20th verbal commitment. The last three pledges have been from defensive linemen.
The Wolfpacker will have more from Johnson later Wednesday.
