Matthews (N.C.) Weddington High won a state title and went 15-1 last season, and one major reason why was the all-around play of star sophomore running back Will Shipley.

He ran 206 times for 1,417 yards and 19 touchdowns and caught 28 passes for 393 yards and six more scores on offense. Defensively, Shipley (5-foot-11, 185 pounds) added 49 tackles, including two for loss and a sack, intercepted two passes, broke up eight more and registered four quarterback hurries.

Shipley even completed three passes — all of them for touchdowns.

“I did my part, and I’m happy with the ending,” Shipley acknowledged.
