The Ritcher family has a long and established history at NC State. Jim Ritcher is considered one of the greatest linemen in school history, and his No. 51 jersey is retired by NC State.
The eldest Ritcher won the Outland Trophy awarded to the best offensive lineman in the country in 1979. He played 16 years in the NFL, selected as an All-Pro three times and twice to the Pro Bowl. He is a member of the college football and Buffalo Bills Halls of Fame.

His son John Ritcher played tight end at NC State from 2002-2005, catching 21 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown in his career. His younger brother Harrison Ritcher is a walk-on sophomore fullback.
