NC State sophomore forward T.J. Warren was named the ACC Player of the Year today in a vote by the league media. He was named on 48 ballots, while Duke freshman Jabari Parker, the league's Freshman of the Year, placed second with 25 votes. It was revealed later in the day that he was also the coaches' pick for Player of the Year.
He is the Wolfpack's first ACC Basketball Player of the Year since Julius Hodge in 2004. Ronnie Shavlik (1956), Lou Pucillo (1959), three-time winner David Thompson (1973-75) and Rodney Monroe (1991) are the others who have done so in NCSU annals.
"This is a tremendous honor for T.J.," head coach Mark Gottfried said in a statement. "The ACC is a great league with many great players. He faced every defense imaginable this year and was still productive almost every single night. This season he has put his name along some of the ACC's all-time greats and he is certainly deserving. Our program is proud of his accomplishments."
The native of Durham, N.C., was announced as an All-ACC first-team selection yesterday, according to both the media and coaches, after he finished the regular season leading the ACC with an average of 24.8 points per game. The 6-foot-8, 215-pounder was a unanimous selection according to the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.
In addition to scoring average, Warren also led the league in field goal percentage (.532) - joining Horace Grant (Clemson, 1987) and Tim Duncan (Wake Forest, 1997) as the only players lead the ACC in both categories. The second-year star also paced the conference in offensive rebounding (3.2 per game), and he ranked eighth overall in total rebounds (7.1 per game), in addition to fourth in steals (1.8 per game).
The forward finished the campaign ranked third nationally in scoring, while his 9.8 made field goals per contest led the country. He also paced the ACC with 26 20-point contests, and he scored more than 30 on nine different occasions.
Warren closed the regular season by netting 41 and 42 points against Pittsburgh and Boston College respectively, to become the first ACC player to record back-to-back 40-point efforts since UNC's Lennie Rosenbleuth in 1957. He was named ACC Player of the Week for the first time of the season after that effort, and he was also named to the USBWA All-District III team earlier today. Interestingly, Parker was named District III Player of the Year.
