Report: A.W. Hamilton to join NC State basketball staff
HoopDirt.com, which covers basketball coaching hires, is reporting that Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., postgrad head coach A.W. Hamilton will be NC State's third assistant coach under recently hired head coach Kevin Keatts. Earlier, Keatts announced staff hires of James Johnson and Takayo Siddle.
Although TheWolfpacker.com has not independently confirmed the Hamilton hire, it has noted previously on The State of Basketball forum that his name was the one most strongly believed to be in the mix for the opening.
Hamilton fits the profile of Keatts' hiring pattern. Hamilton played for Keatts at Hargrave before signing with Wake Forest. Keatts left Hargrave for three years from 2001-03 to be an assistant coach at Marshall, and in that time Hamilton transferred from Wake Forest to Marshall to reunite with Keatts.
Hamilton worked as a graduate assistant at Marshall from 2005-06 before taking a job as Keatts' assistant at Hargrave. He became the head coach when Keatts left to take a job at Louisville as an assistant in 2011.
In 2012 and 2016, Hamilton was named the National Prep Coach of the Year. In 2016, Hargrave went 47-1 and won the National Prep Championship. (Story) He had a 236-26 record as Hargrave's coach through this season.
Both Johnson and Siddle also had backgrounds with Keatts. Johnson was his teammate at Ferrum College and both coached one season together at Hargrave. Siddle played for Keatts at Hargave and was his assistant for all three of Keatts' seasons at UNC Wilmington.
