Raleigh Millbrook receiver Wesley Grimes had high expectations entering this season.

The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder cited several reasons why. In a weird way, the COVID-19 pandemic helped out in that it allowed Grimes to get more time to train, he noted.

“I have developed my body: bigger, stronger and faster,” Grimes noted. “I think I’ve grown a lot in the past year.”

Perhaps more importantly was that Grimes had developed good chemistry with Millbrook’s quarterback, Ford Spainhour. After a slow start in the opener that can be somewhat blamed on sloppy conditions due to weather, Grimes has exploded.

In his next two contests combined, Grimes caught 12 passes for 316 yards and six touchdowns. In week five, Grimes added five receptions for 120 yards and two more scores. Meanwhile, Millbrook is off to a 4-1 start.

Colleges have taken notice of Grimes’ development, including NC State, which offered him on March 2. Being a local product, Grimes knows his way around the Raleigh campus.
