The Wolfpack targeted All-American QB Jay Davis of Clearwater, Fla. last year and will most likely try to sign at least one QB in 2002. One of the top signal-callers in the Southeast this year looks to be Maurice Avery (6-2, 190 pounds, 4.6 in the 40) of Mcnair High School in Atlanta, Georgia.
Avery took over the reins of the Mustang program in 1999 as a sophomore and threw for 1,307 yards, completing 84 of 183 passes with six interceptions and 11 touchdowns. He was named All-Dekalb County Honorable Mention.
In 2000 Avery really blossomed as a quarterback as he led the state of Georgia in TD passes with 16. On the season he completed 94 of 199 passes for 1,522 yards with just seven interceptions. On the season he put together four-200-yard passing performances and was chosen athlete of the week by The Atlanta Journal Constitution for his 230 yard, three touchdown performance against Stone Mountain, Georgia. He was named All-Dekalb County and received all-state honorable mention.
Early in the recruiting season Avery is receiving division one interest from Florida State, UNC, NC State, Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Auburn. Rivals.com has listed him as one of the top 100 prospects in the southeast.
