Last May, former NC State baseball player and Wolfpack Club associate director Chris Combs learned that he has ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Since then, Combs has chosen to fight the disease with the competitive spirit that made him one of the top home run hitters (tied for fifth all time at NC State) in school history.
His family raised $1 million for ALS research at a gala last September. He joined former men’s basketball coach Mark Gottfried and his staff to grow a beard in November to raise awareness, and there is a team that will be walking for Team Chris Combs this Saturday for the Walk to Defeat ALS.
Combs will also be in Boston Saturday to watch the Pack play Boston College at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. The game is BC’s annual ALS Awareness Game. Former Eagles baseball player and captain Pete Frates, who helped start the Ice Bucket Challenge craze, is also battling ALS.
