All eyes will be on the NC State quarterback position whenever football gets played again.

New NC State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tim Beck has a proven track record, developing multiple quarterbacks over the years during his various coaching stops.

Reporter Anwar Richardson of Texas Rivals said Beck did a quality job of recruiting quarterbacks and leaving that position better than when he arrived.

"The two positive things I can say about Beck is he can recruit players and develop quarterbacks," Richardson said. "No matter what happened at Texas, Beck deserves credit for helping Sam Ehlinger transform from a freshman who made several mistakes to a sophomore who did not record an interception in 10 straight games.

"Ehlinger is already viewed as one of the ten best quarterbacks in UT history, and Beck helped him develop. Beck’s ability to develop Ehlinger is a huge feather in his cap."

The first order of business is developing redshirt sophomore quarterback Devin Leary for the Wolfpack. He went 101-of-210 passing for 1,219 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions last year. He isn't a dual threat, which Beck has often worked with over the years.

Here is a year-by-year look at Beck's coaching career when he was an offensive coordinator or co-offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach or passing game coordinator. He also has coached wide receivers or running backs, but that isn't included in the chart below.

Missouri State (1998, offensive coordinator)

The first quarterback that Beck worked with was Derek Jensen at Missouri State in 1998, where he was the offensive coordinator. Jensen went 208 of 378 for 2,554 passing yards. Jensen threw for over 221 yards in seven different games, with a season-high 324 in a 49-42 win over Illinois State on Nov. 7, 1998. The Bears went 5-6 on the season and finished with 2,692 passing, rushed for 1,850 yards and averaged 28.9 points per game under head coach Del Miller.

Kansas (2007, wide receiver/passing game coach)

Beck became the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at Kansas in 2007, and he got to work with the quarterback he recruited. Beck had landed quarterback Todd Reesing out of Lake Travis (Texas) High in the class of 2006, and he became a starter at Kansas relatively quickly for coach Mark Mangino.

Reesing had played three games in 2006, but broke through in 2007 in his first season as a starter. He went 276-of-446 passing for 3,486 yards, 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also rushed for 197 yards and three scores for the 12-1 Jayhawks, who reached the Orange Bowl. Kansas topped Virginia Tech 24-21 in the Orange Bowl to cap the dream season. Beck left for Nebraska, but Reesing went on to throw for 11,194 yards and 90 touchdowns in his KU college career.

Nebraska (2011-14, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks)

Beck was hired to be the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Nebraska from 2011-2014 under head coach Bo Pelini, and he again inherited a young but talented quarterback in sophomore Taylor Martinez. The Huskers went 9-4 and fell 30-13 to South Carolina in the Capital One Bowl

Martinez was able to learn the ins and outs of the position the previous year in the Big 12, but in 2011, Nebraska made the move to the Big Ten. He improved to go 162-of-288 passing for 2,089 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions, and also rushed for 874 yards and nine touchdowns on 188 carries.

• Martinez went to the next level in 2012 in helping Nebraska go 10-4. He passed for 2,871 yards and rushed for 1,019 yards and combined for 33 touchdowns. He went 228-of-368 passing and had 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He averaged 5.2 rushing yards per play and had 10 scores. Nebraska fell 45-31 to Georgia in the Capital One Bowl.

• The 2013 season proved bumpy at the quarterback position but Nebraska still went 9-4 overall. Martinez started the first three games, but suffered a foot injury, and then returned Oct. 26, 2013, but his season came to an end after losing at Minnesota due to the same injury. Martinez passed for 7,258 yards and 56 touchdowns and rushed for 2,975 yards and 31 scores in his 44-game Nebraska career.

Both Ron Kellogg III and Tommy Armstrong Jr. split starts in Martinez’s absence. Armstrong threw for 966 yards and nine touchdowns, plus rushed for 202 yards and two scores. Kellogg added 919 passing yards and six scores and he rushed for minus-11 yards. Nebraska and Armstrong topped Georgia 24-19 in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1, 2014.

• Getting Armstrong some starts in 2013 helped Nebraska in 2014, with the Huskers going 9-4. Armstrong established himself as the main quarterback and went 184-of-345 passing for 2,695 yards, 22 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also finished second on the team with 721 rushing yards and seven scores on 146 carries. Nebraska lost a shootout 45-42 to USC in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 27, 2014.

Ohio State (2015-16, co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks)

Beck was hired in 2015-2016 to be the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ohio State under head coach Urban Meyer. The Buckeyes played two quarterbacks to finish 12-1 in 2015, topping Notre Dame 44-28 in the Fiesta Bowl, to finish No. 4 nationally.

J.T. Barrett had established himself as a star quarterback the previous season, but the freshman got hurt and Cardale Jones ended up leading OSU to the Big Ten championship and then topped Alabama and Oregon to win the national title. The two quarterbacks split time in 2015.

Barrett played in 11 games and went 93-of-147 passing for 992 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions, and he added 682 rushing yards and 11 scores. Barrett seized the job at the end of the season and guided the Buckeyes to wins at Michigan and Notre Dame in the bowl game.

Jones got to play in 10 games his junior year in 2015 and went 109-of-175 passing for 1,459 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions, and added 64 carries for 193 yards and two scores. He entered the NFL Draft after the season. Jones passed for over 186 yards in five games.

• The 2016 season was smoother at the quarterback spot with just Barrett at the spot. His backup ended up being star player in his own right — LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, who won the 2019 Heisman Trophy.

Barrett and the Buckeyes went 11-2, falling 31-0 to Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl. He went 233-of-379 passing for 2,555 yards, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions, and he rushed 205 times for 845 yards and nine scores.

Barrett threw for for over 220 yards in seven games, and he rushed for over 100 yards in three contests. The lone losses were at Penn State and Clemson.

Texas (2017-19, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks)

Beck was brought to Texas by new head coach Tom Herman, serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The Longhorns era centered around the development of quarterback Sam Ehlinger, who is a senior for the 2020 campaign.

Ehlinger and Shane Buechele ended up splitting the job in 2017, with Ehlinger seizing the job at the end of the season. Buechele started the season and threw for 375 yards and accumulated three touchdowns in a loss against Maryland, and then started four other games. He finished with 1,405 passing yards, seven touchdowns and four interceptions, and he rushed for 99 yards and two scores.

Ehlinger proved to be a quality dual-threat quarterback during his starts in 2017. He passed for 380 yards and two scores and rushed for 107 yards in a win over Kansas State, and he added 278 passing yard and 106 rushing yards with a combined two scores in a loss to Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout.

Ehlinger finished his freshman year going 158-of-275 passing for 1,915 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions, and he rushed 114 times for 381 yards and two scores. Texas finished 7-6 and topped Missouri 33-16 in the Texas Bowl.

• Texas emerged in 2018 to 10-4 and the Longhorns squeezed by Georgia 28-21 in the Sugar Bowl. Ehlinger’s emergence was a big reason why. He went 275-of-425 passing for 3,292 yards, 25 touchdowns and five interceptions, and he rushed for 482 yards and 16 scores on 164 carries.

Ehlinger accounted for at least four touchdowns against Oklahoma, at Oklahoma State, West Virginia, at Texas Tech, and vs. Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game. In the two games against the Sooners he combined for 663 passing yards and four touchdowns, and he rushed for 114 yards and five scores.

Buechele came in for an injured Ehlinger and played the majority of the 23-17 win over Baylor.

• Ehlinger improved in every key statistical category last year, but the Longhorns finished 8-5 and 38-10 win over Utah in the Alamo Bowl.

He completed 65.2 percent of his passes and had 32 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for Texas. He went 296-of-454 passing for 3,663 yards, and he also rushed 165 times for 677 yards and seven scores.

Ehlinger threw for four touchdowns in four different games, and he accounted for four scores between passing or rushing in two other contests. He threw for over 300 yards four games. He passed for 401 yards and four scores, plus rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown in a 45-38 loss against LSU on Sept. 7, 2019.

Buechele transferred to SMU, where he lit it up for 3,929 yards and 34 touchdowns last year. Freshman Casey Thompson ended up being the backup but played limited snaps.
