Decatur (Ga.) Columbia High senior guard Miah Spencer is bringing her championship background to NC State next year.

The 5-foot-8 Spencer scored 15 points to help Columbia whip Washington County 57-33 in the Georgia Class AAA title game to cap a 24-5 season. She followed with a strong spring and summer with the Wallace Prather Celtics AAU team and caught the eye of NC State assistant coach Ken Griffin who started recruiting her last July.

Spencer made her first and only official visit to NC State Oct. 5-7 and fell in love with the school. It didn't hurt that the self-professed "big college football fan" got to watch the Wolfpack upset then-No. 3 Florida State 17-16 Oct. 6 at Carter-Finley Stadium.

"I liked everything," Spencer said. "I got to see the campus, where the players get to stay and all of that stuff. I got to see the town and that was nice. I spent time with all of the players."

Head coach Kellie Harper was thrilled with the news that Spencer wanted to be the Wolfpack's first commit in the class of 2013.

"She is really nice and laid back," Spencer said. "She is very connected with the team. She was very, very excited and enthusiastic that I chose NC State."

Spencer earned all-state honors for Columbia High and made the junior all-star team in the North-South all-star game in Georgia. She describes herself as a versatile performer on the court.

"I've played point guard, but I can also play shooting guard," Spencer said. "I'm quick, can drive to the basket and I like to shoot. I love to play defense and get a lot of steals.

"I want to improve my ball handling this season."

The competition for Spencer involved several SEC programs, but she really wanted to play in the ACC.

"I was shocked and excited when a school like NC State started recruiting me," Spencer said. "I got offered by Alabama, Syracuse, Mississippi State, Western Carolina, Tennessee-Chattanooga.

"Playing in the ACC will be exciting. I'm ready for it."

Spencer also liked the academic programs she could choose from at NC State.

"I could tell they have a good academic environment," Spencer said. "They really take time to teach their students. I want to major in communications and sports management."

Spencer and one other starter return for Columbia High in its quest to repeat as state champions. Columbia also won in 2010.

Spencer's AAU coach, Renardo Hudson, knows the Wolfpack got a quality player arriving next year.

"She is just phenomenal and a consistent, smart player," Hudson said. "She knows how to win big-time ball games. The NC State fans will love this kid, and want to see her play. She's going to change the feeling at NC State.

"She plays an up-tempo game and is a team player. She'll strive to make that team the best in the conference and the country."
