Saturday’s spring game at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh will feature many (although not all) of NC State’s best-known stars and players.
However, what may be most interesting for the diehards is to see some of the development and potential of others poised to have higher profiles on the team.
Here are five such possibilities worth watching.
Freshman quarterback Ben Finley
We know that redshirt sophomore Devin Leary is the starter at quarterback for NC State. The question is who will back up, and how ready will that reserve be in case he is needed like Bailey Hockman was in 2020?
That’s why Finley is so intriguing to watch.
He’s the leading contender to be the second-string quarterback, although early enrollee Aaron McLaughlin would like to get into the mix by the time preseason camp is ending. In his one stretch of action in 2020, Finley completed 13 of 20 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown, but he also turned it over three times (two interceptions and a fumble).
During that lopsided loss at UNC, the play calling was also somewhat conservative for Finley with some high percentage passes. Now that he has been on campus through a season and a full spring practice, how much more comfortable does Finley look will be one of the storylines to watch on Saturday.
