David Amerson leads the way on Phil Steeles Preseason All-ACC team
Seven Wolfpack players were named to
Phil Steele's 2012 Preseason All-ACC squads,
announced on Tuesday afternoon.
All-America cornerback
David Amerson was the lone first-team selection. The junior from Greensboro, set ACC and NC State single-season records with 13 interceptions last season, and his total ties for the second-most in FBS history. He won the Jack Tatum Award, given to the nation's top defensive back, and already ranks third among the Pack's all-time interception leaders.
Meanwhile, four NC State players were named to the third-team, while three more were tabbed to the fourth-team.
Center
Camden Wentz, offensive tackle
R.J. Mattes and safeties
Earl Wolff and
Brandan Bishop were honored with third-team selections, while quarterback
Mike Glennon, running back
Tony Creecy and punter
Wil Baumann were given fourth-team laurels.
Wentz, a redshirt senior, started all 13 games for the second-straight campaign last year, while classmate Mattes started 12 of his 13 appearances in 2011. He is the only four-year starter on the offense.
Wolff is the team's top returning tackler and is also in his final year of eligibility. The safety totaled 113 tackles, second-most on the team, last fall and has caused five fumbles during his career.
Bishop, the team's other starting safety, is also a senior and ranks as the team's most experienced player, with 37 career starts. He has logged nine interceptions in college and finished 2011 with 99 tackles, which ranked third on the team.
Glennon thrived in his first campaign as the starter last year, and totaled 3,054 yards and 31 touchdowns in 13 starts. He ranked in the top five of the ACC for touchdown throws (second) and passing yards per game (fourth) in 2011.
Creecy, a redshirt sophomore, has never started a game, but proved to be a valuable rusher and receiver out of the backfield last season. He finished the campaign with 401 yards and a score on the ground, while his receptions added 157 yards and three touchdowns.
Baumann was another youngster who excelled last season, averaging 37.5 yards per punt as a true freshman. He landed 21 of his 65 punts inside the 20-yard line, which ranked third in the ACC, and was one of just six true freshmen in the FBS ranks to earn a starting punter gig.
