The new NBA Draft rules are perfect for players such as NC State sophomore power forward Abdul-Malik Abu to find out where he stands or perhaps see what he needs to work on.
Abu cryptically tweeted out Thursday about his future plans, and his former traveling coach, Tyron Boswell of Expressions Elite, confirmed that he’ll be testing the NBA Draft waters and not hiring an agent. He has until May 25 to make a final decision.
Abu averaged 12.9 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 49.0 percent from the field and 63.0 percent from the free-throw line. The 6-foot-8, 240-pounder from Boston collected 14 double-doubles this season for points and rebounds.
Abu scored a season-high 22 points against Georgia Tech on Jan. 27, and grabbed season-high 17 rebounds (plus scored 16 points) in a 88-80 loss at Duke on Feb. 6. Abu had 19 points and nine rebounds in the ACC Tournament contest against Duke on March 9.
DraftExpress.com ranks Abu the No. 25 overall player in the sophomore class, but he is not in the top 100 regardless of class. Getting his name out to NBA general managers could be a bonus of going through the draft process if he does elect to return to NC State for next year.
