NC State basketball's 2020-21 season ended in March with a loss to Colorado State in the NIT quarterfinals, but the Wolfpack's offseason is only beginning.
Here are some observations, questions and predictions in 3-2-1 form as it relates to the early offseason for the Pack:
Three observations
1. NC State is actively pursuing several names in the transfer portal.
Almost every college basketball program in the country has been linked to at least one player in the transfer portal, and NC State is no exception. In fact, the Wolfpack has been publicly linked to several high-profile names and already picked up a commitment from Providence transfer sophomore forward Greg Gantt.
The active transfer portal already is and will continue to be college basketball’s biggest offseason story. With over 1,200 names in the portal as of April 5th, that would average out to at least three transfers per Division I program if each team were to pick up an equal number of players.
The Wolfpack had one scholarship vacancy entering the offseason, which was claimed by Gantt. Freshman forward Nick Farrar then announced he was entering the portal the following day, which quickly opened up another scholarship.
That means NC State will be adding at least one more new face to join its 2021-22 roster. That scholarship could go to an incoming freshman in the 2021 class or a transfer. Considering the next observation on this list, it’s more likely to be the latter than the former.
