Clayton (N.C.) High receiver Devin Carter told The Wolfpacker on April 29 while in Charlotte for the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp that he was going to make his decision “soon.”

Turned out he meant within two weeks. Around midday last Friday, while at NC State for his second unofficial visit since picking up an offer from the Wolfpack on April 17, Carter gave head coach Dave Doeren his verbal commitment. A source confirmed the news shortly after Doeren tweeted his trademark “Red Light Is On.”

Earlier in the week, Wake Forest had joined his offer list that also included Michigan State, Minnesota, Colorado State, East Carolina, Old Dominion and Elon.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Carter broke out as a junior, posting catching 78 passes for 1,167 yards and 15 touchdowns.

At a recent Shrine Bowl Combine, Carter showed off his athleticism by running the 40-yard dash in 4.47 and 4.52 seconds (hand timed), broad jumping 10-0 and doing 17 reps at 185 pounds on the bench press.

During last weekend’s Nike Opening Regional in Charlotte, Carter was laser-timed at 4.78 seconds in the 40 (the fastest 40 recorded on the day was 4.51 seconds) and 4.38 seconds in the shuttle. He also had a 32.4-inch vertical.

Carter becomes NC State’s fifth verbal commitment in the 2018 class and third from an in-state prospect. (He's also the second "Devin," joining quarterback Devin Leary from Timber Creek High in Sickerville, N.J.).
