Forward Saddiq Bey’s strong February continued for Washington (D.C.) Sidwell Friends. He had a triple-double of 25 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in an 83-69 home win over Norfolk (Va.) Collegiate on Feb. 17. Bey made 9 of 14 shots from the field, including 3 of 7 three-pointers.
Three days later, Bey had 23 points, making 8 of 12 overall shots and 2 of 3 threes, in a 65-59 loss at McLean (Va.) Potomac School. He added nine rebounds, seven assists and a steal.
On Feb. 23, Bey struggled with his touch, especially at the line, while scoring 19 points in a 59-56 loss to city rival Maret High in the conference tournament. Bey made 9 of 19 shots, but he went 0 for 3 on three-pointers and just 1 of 8 at the free-throw line.
For the season, Bey averaged 21.2 points in 20 games played, shooting 150 of 312 from the field for 48.1 percent, including 28 of 70 on threes for 40.0 percent. He was 96 of 142 at the line for 67.6 percent. Prior to the Maret game though he was shooting 70.9 percent from the charity stripe.
Sidwell Friends was 12-12 on the year.
Forward Jericole Hellems scored 27 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field, including 4 of 5 on threes, and added 11 rebounds, two steals and two assists on Feb. 22 in an 81-68 win at Sikeston (Mo.) High. Five days later, he had 18 points after making 6 of 12 shots, including his lone three-point attempt, and made it a second straight double-double with 10 boards. He also had five assists, two steals and two blocks in a 99-72 win at Overland (Mo.) Ritenour High.
On March 2, Hellems poured in 24 points, shooting 10 of 18 from the field and 2 of 6 on threes, and had seven rebounds, in a lopsided 90-53 win over city rival Ladue High, which was played on a neutral floor in Overton, to win the district title.
Hellems is averaging 22.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game through 25 contests. He is shooting 52.5 percent from the field and 43.8 percent on threes (46 of 105). He has also made 117 of 159 free throws for 73.6 percent.
Chaminade is 22-4, and Hellems is the first player in school history to be a part of four district championships.
Derek Funderburk, a redshirt freshman at Northwest Florida State College, finished his regular season by scoring 15 points and grabbing eight rebounds in a 99-65 home win over Tallahassee Community College.
Funderburk is averaging 11.5 points and 5.1 rebounds in 29 games, during which Northwest Florida State College is 27-2. Funderburk is shooting 52.0 percent from the field, including making 16 of 56 threes (28.6 percent). He is also 87 of 117 at the line for 74.4 percent.
Northwest Florida State College is expected to play in the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament later in March, but first it will participate in the NJCAA Region 8 Tournament beginning Wednesday.
