NC State basketball made its first splash in the transfer market Wednesday with the commitment of Providence transfer sophomore guard Greg Gantt.

Gantt, a 6-8, 220-pound forward, averaged 4.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game last season for the Friars of the Big East Conference.

A native of Fayetteville, N.C., Gantt was previously recruited by Wolfpack head coach Kevin Keatts out of high school. He was a four-star prospect that was ranked the No. 55 overall recruit in the 2019 class according to Rivals.

The Wolfpacker spoke with Rivals basketball recruiting analyst Jamie Shaw, who regularly followed Gantt in high school, to break down what the Pack is getting with its newest transfer commitment.

Gantt’s stats in his first two years of collegiate ball don’t necessarily jump off the page, but the production may have been a result of poor system-fit rather than a lack of ability for the former four-star.

Providence runs a slower-paced, motion-style offense, and Gantt had the lowest usage rate of the Friars’ 10-man rotation last season.

At NC State, Gantt believes he can not only start a new beginning, but he can also better fit in Keatts’ high-tempo system.

“It's a great system fit,” Shaw said. “I like the length factor, I like the versatility factor, and I really like the defensive factor. He's got athleticism and pop too. Standing 6-7, 6-8, there's a lot of different things he can do, especially on the defensive end of the floor, which is kind of what Keatts lives and dies by, on the defensive end.
