NC State Wolfpack football lands offensive lineman Anthony Carter Jr.

While NC State basketball was securing a win over Notre Dame last Wednesday, its football program was adding an important football recruit.

Three-star offensive lineman Anthony Carter Jr. from Butler High in Matthews, N.C. announced on Twitter that he was verbally committing to the Wolfpack. The well-recruited Carter also reported offers from Boston College, Duke, Illinois, Louisville, Michigan State, North Carolina, Texas A&M, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. Rivals.com ranks Carter as the No. 26 prospect from the state of North Carolina in the class of 2020.

Carter led a low-key recruitment, with his only known trip this past fall of any variety an unofficial visit to NC State when it hosted Clemson. He had also taken a trip to Raleigh for a junior day last spring.

Offensive line coach John Garrison though had developed a strong rapport with Carter throughout the recruiting process, and that helped carry the day. Garrison had told Carter that the Pack liked his versatility, noting Carter could play guard or tackle.

The 6-4, 300-pounder was chosen to play in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas All-Star Game in Spartanburg, S.C., but did not participate. He is a three-year starter who was named to both the Charlotte Observer’s All-Region team and Southwestern 4A All-Conference squad three straight seasons. NCPreps.com named Carter to its All-State team in 2019.

Carter chose not to sign in December after originally intending to enroll early in college. He gives NC State 19 verbal commitments in the 2020 class, which is ranked No. 45 nationally by Rivals.com.
