Notes

Charleston Southern overview: The Charleston Southern season got off to a rough start with a 110-62 loss at Davidson on Friday.

Charleston Southern played Davidson without star sophomore shooting guard Christian Keeling and senior point guard Cortez Mitchell for undisclosed reasons. Only one player reached double figures for Buccaneers and Davidson torched the nets for 26 three-pointers in an astonishing 53 attempts (49.1 percent).

KenPom.com has Charleston Southern ranked No. 301 out of 351 Division I programs.

Backcourt: The absence of Keeling and Mitchell on Friday was big, and it will be interesting to see if they are cleared to play against NC State.

Keeling averaged 17.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game last year as a freshman, and he shot 34.2 percent from three-point land. Mitchell, a former junior college transfer, averaged 11.1 points per game and he shot 35.1 percent on three-pointers.

Add in Armel Potter, who averaged 12.7 points and 3.2 assists per game last year, transferring to George Washington, and it makes for a rough transition to start the season.

Freshmen Deontaye Buskey and Phlandrous Fleming Jr. started against Davidson, with seniors Jamal Thomas and JC Cavin chipping in at shooting guard and point guard respectively.

Buskey averaged 17.5 points and five assists per game his senior year at Daphne (Ala.) High. Fleming was a standout at Athens (Ga.) Cedar Shoals, where he averaged 21 points and eight rebounds per game.

The 6-3, 200-pound Thomas averaged 5.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game last year after transferring in from junior college. The 6-0, 170-pound Cavin is a transfer from Columbia International University, where he averaged 13.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

Frontcourt: Junior forward Travis McConico was the lone bright spot against Davidson. He had 17 points, six rebounds and went 2 of 6 from three-point range.

McConico transferred in from Florida State College at Jacksonville, where he made 3.5 three-pointers per game en route to averaging 19.2 points and 7.7 rebounds a contest.

Freshman Shawn Price averaged 22.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game his senior year at Port Charlotte (Fla.) High, and he had seven points and four assists in his college debut.

Sophomore center Jordan Jones was a deep reserve last year, averaged 1.5 points and 1.8 rebounds in 8.8 minutes per game. He had seven points and four rebounds in 16 minutes against Davidson.

Senior post player Javis Howard was an accomplished prep player and been a steady player for Charleston Southern. The 6-8, 220-pounder averaged 7.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game his junior year, and he shot 56.2 percent from the field. He cracked double figures in 11 games last year, including a pair of double-doubles. He had 16 points and 12 rebounds against South Carolina Upstate on Nov. 19, 2016, and he had 12 points and 11 boards vs. Longwood on Jan. 21, 2017.

Freshmen forwards Jamaal David and Ty Jones both come off the bench. The former redshirted last year and the 6-6, 190-pounder averaged 13 points and seven rebounds per game at Williston Northampton in Massachusetts.

The 6-6, 215-pound Jones amassed 2,092 points and 908 rebounds at Pontotoc (Miss.) High, and he averaged 25.6 points and 9.7 rebounds his senior year.
