When NC State athletic director Debbie Yow was hired on June 25, 2010, the Wolfpack had just one top 25 program that previous school year — men's soccer.
NC State also had never been in the top 30 in the Learfield Sports Director’s Cup standings. That has all changed in recent years with the Wolfpack reaching No. 27 in 2014-2015 and No. 29 last year. However, the bar could be raised to a level unforeseen in Raleigh this spring.
NC State is currently ranked No. 4 in the country with 663.50 points in the Sports Director’s Cup standings thanks to a strong winter that accumulated 360 points. The winter helped NC State rise up three spots from No. 7, following an earlier release in the winter.
The winter tally thus far ranked eighth in the country following Ohio State (556), Stanford (454.50), Texas A&M (416.25), Michigan (394), Georgia (368.50), Penn State (367.75) and Kentucky (366.5).
NCSU trails just Stanford (977.50), Penn State (753.75) and Michigan (713.50) before the final winter rankings are released later in April. Gymnastics, which finished third at its regional last weekend, will add points to the next release, scheduled for Thursday. Duke is the next closest ACC program with 587 points.
NC State had nine teams finish in their respective top 25 rankings in 2016-2017.
