"He did commit to NC State," assistant coach Dan Kendra noted. "He just felt really comfortable there."
Newell is NC State's 20th commitment of the year, not including transfer Brandon Jeffries. He had taken official visits to Boston College, Maryland, Tennessee and Virginia in addition to NC State. The final decision came between the Cavaliers, Vols and Wolfpack.
Most schools were recruiting Newell as a defensive end, but the Wolfpack recruited him for offense. He will likely start at wide receiver.
Newell proved a standout on both sides of the ball for Bethlehem Catholic. The Golden Hawks went 7-5 and won one playoff game. Newell caught 45 passes on offense and had three touchdowns. On defense, he had 70 tackles and six sacks. He was a second-team All-Area selection.
Rivals.com lists Newell as a three-star prospect. He's listed as the No. 24 strongside defensive end in the country and No. 8 prospect from Pennsylvania. He boasts a 2.96 GPA, according to Rivals.
Newell is 6-foot-5, 230 pounds and runs a 4.6 second 40-yard dash. He bench presses 260 pounds.
Newell also is a standout on Bethlehem Catholic's basketball team. His free throw in the first quarter of a 55-45 win over Nazareth on Dec. 17 gave him his 1,000th career
