Notes

Florida State overview: The Seminoles have been streaky, but enter Wednesday’s game with major momentum.

FSU lost at Georgia Tech and at Syracuse in back-to-back contests to close out January, but responded in a big way. The Seminoles won 75-57 at Miami Feb. 1 and then obliterated Clemson 109-61 on Sunday.

Florida State lost shooting guard Malik Beasley after his freshman year from last year’s team, but signed star freshman forward Jonathan Isaac and fifth-year senior center Michael Ojo returned to good health.

Backcourt: Sophomore Dwayne Bacon has improved his outside shooting this season, bettering his percentage by nearly 11 points. He averaged 15.8 points per game and shot 28.1 percent from beyond the arc last year, but has improved to 17.6 points per contest and is shooting a smooth 39.0 percent from three-point land.

Bacon has cracked double figures in every game, and came up big in a 60-58 win at Virginia and against Clemson. He went 6 of 9 from three-point land en route to 29 points in both games. Bacon has cracked at least 20 points in seven contests.

Redshirt junior Xavier Rathan-Mayes has become a steady floor general. His scoring average might be lower than in years past, but he’s shooting 45.7 percent from the field and 35.6 percent on three-pointers, both career highs. He also has lowered his turnovers.

The former NC State recruiting target had a season-high 23 points plus seven rebounds in a 88-72 win over Wake Forest. He also had 21 points in an 88-72 win over Duke. Rathan-Mayes has dished out at least seven assists in seven contests.

Freshmen guards C.J. Walker and Trent Forrest and sophomore shooting guard PJ Savoy, a junior college transfer, have added to the Seminoles’ depth this season.

The 6-1, 195-pound Walker, a former Purdue commitment, is averaging 5.8 points in 13.2 minutes per game. The point guard is shooting 44.2 percent from the field and 34.1 percent on three-pointers. Walker has cracked double figures in three games, including 13 points twice. The most recent was getting 13 points and three three-pointers against Wake Forest.

The 6-5, 215-pound Forrest is averaging 5.4 points and 2.8 rebounds in 16.5 minutes per game. The slasher is shooting 48.9 percent from the field, but is just 1 of 8 on three-pointers.

The 6-4, 200-pound Savoy has tried 87 field goal attempts, and all but 11 are from three-point land. He is 31 of 76 on them for 40.8 percent. Savoy has scored at least 10 points in five games, and erupted for seven three-pointers en route to a career-high 27 points in a 98-49 win versus Southern Mississippi.

Frontcourt: Isaac is unique due to his 6-10 length and the ability to stretch a defense out to three-point land. He is shooting 52.7 percent from the field and 36.1 percent on three-pointers.

The former Rivals.com five-star prospect had a season-high 23 points, plus 10 rebounds and seven blocks, in an 83-80 win over Notre Dame. Isaac has six double-doubles on the season and has scored at least 10 points in 15 contests.

Athletic sophomore small forward Terance Mann has thrived in his increased role in trying to replace the minutes of his former recruiting classmate Beasley. Mann, who averaged 5.2 points and 3.7 rebounds per game last year, has increased his production to 8.8 points and 4.5 boards a contest. Mann is shooting a blistering 58.0 percent from the field, but isn’t a three-point threat (he is just 4 of 13 for the season).

Mann had 22 points and nine rebounds in the 93-78 win over Virginia Tech. He has cracked double figures in 11 games, and has one double-double, with 16 points and 10 boards in a 83-78 win over Florida.

Junior college transfer Braian Angola-Rodas provides depth behind Mann and Bacon. The 6-6, 195-pounder from Colombia is averaging 4.0 points and 1.8 rebounds in 12.2 minutes per game. He is shooting 40.6 percent on three-pointers and went 3 of 3 from beyond the arc en route to an ACC-best 12 points against Clemson.

The massive Ojo (7-1, 304) missed last year due to injury, and he is setting career highs in points, rebounds and blocks per game.

FSU has a deep group of power forwards and centers behind Ojo. Sophomore center Christ Koumadje is listed at 7-4 and 233 pounds, and junior Phil Cofer and senior Jarquez Smith both can play power forward or center.

Koumadje is a averaging 3.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 10.3 minutes per game. The athletic 6-9, 236-pound Smith is an adept mid-range shooter and is averaging 4.5 points and 2.9 rebounds in 14.0 minutes per game.

The 6-8, 218-pound Cofer missed all but 11 games last year due to injury, and hasn’t regained his freshman-year form. He averaged 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds as the starting power forward in 2014-15, but has fallen to 2.9 points and 2.0 rebounds per game this season.
