Scouting video: Martin close to returning to actio

Unsigned senior power forward Derrick Martin was arguably having his best game of the season against Apex in the GlaxoSmithKline Invitational at Raleigh Broughton High.
The Huntsville, Ala., native is a capable jump shooter and is a high-flying athlete Red Springs (N.C.) Flora MacDonald. He combined both abilities against Apex on Dec. 30. Unfortunately for him, he went down with a knee injury, that at first, seemed dire. The 6-foot-8, 200-pound Martin is expected to return to the court in the near future, and college recruiters will continue to monitor his progress on the court and in the classroom.

Martin finished with nine points, seven rebounds and one block against Apex, before going down with the knee injury. The Cougars lost 64-61 in the third-place game of the Summit Hospitality Invitational bracket.
Martin opened up the GSK Invitational with just two points, five rebounds and three blocked shots in a 73-66 win over West Charlotte on Dec. 28. Martin bounced back Dec. 29 with eight points, 14 rebounds, and three blocked shots in the semifinals against United Faith of Charlotte, N.C., but the Cougars lost 79-70.
Martin is looking for his first scholarship offer, but has interest from NC State, Alabama, Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State and Murray State, among others. He was a frequent visitor to NC State in the fall with Wolfpack commit Luke Cothron, who is Martin's teammate at Flora MacDonald and cousin.
