NCSU faces George Mason without Tracy Smith

NC State senior forward Tracy Smith will not compete in the remaining games of the Charleston Classic in Charleston, S.C.
Smith, who played just six minutes in Thursday's 85-65 win over East Carolina, has returned to Raleigh to have his knee evaluated by NC State's orthopedic staff.

Smith was a preseason All-ACC first-team selection. He scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the season opener against Tennessee Tech on Nov. 12, however, he was in obvious pain at the end of the game.
Last year, Smith had a breakout season and earned second-team All-ACC honors. He led NCSU with 16.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, was tied for the team lead with 35 blocks and ranked second on the team with 40 steals. He also led NC State with 32.1 minutes per game.
"He's the No. 1 option when we don't have a shot on the fast break," said NC State coach Sidney Lowe in a past interview. "We want to get it down the floor, and he will still have some opportunities when we push the ball. In the post, he's the guy we will go to."
NC State will turn to sophomores DeShawn Painter and Jordan Vandenberg at the center position. The Wolfpack play George Mason at 6 p.m. tonight on ESPNU.
Painter set new career highs in points and rebounds against East Carolina. He finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots in 26 minutes of action.
Vandenberg added three points, one rebound and three blocks in seven minutes of action against the Pirates.

Notes
George Mason: Hancock set a new career high with 18 points against Charlotte in the 78-56 victory Thursday. The Patriots dominated the paint, 48-16, and out-rebounded the 49ers 43-30 … Cornelius is a former standout at Charlotte Victory Christian and he is a past participant in the Carolina Challenge run by ESPN.com's Dave Telep. He led the CAA in three-point shooting percentage last year (43.3) … Athletic sophomore wing Sherrod Wright had arthoscopic surgery in the offseason and hasn't played this season. He averaged 5.5 points a game last year … Long led the Patriots in scoring with 12.2 points per game last year, plus assists (3.1), steals (1.3) and free-throw percentage (73.6). He needs just 78 points to reach a 1,000 for his career, and was a second-team All-CAA selection last year.
NC State: Freshman point guard Ryan Harrow has sparked the Wolfpack off the bench to fill the void created by Gonzalez's struggles. Harrow had 16 points and four assists against Tennessee Tech on Nov. 12, and 11 points and 10 assists against East Carolina on Thursday. Gonzalez will be looking to bounce back after picking up four fouls in 10 minutes against the Pirates … Sophomore power forward Richard Howell had eight points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block in 23 minutes against ECU. He started the opener, but injured his ankle in practice Wednesday. Leslie earned the start against the Pirates, but Howell proved to be healthy for the Wolfpack … Junior wing C.J. Williams scored 10 points off the bench against East Carolina. He cracked double figures for the ninth time in his Wolfpack career. He did it three times his freshman year and five times last year.
