Two of the highest-paid athletic directors in the ACC have spoken out in opposition of name, image and likeness (NIL) in college sports in recent weeks.
Unsurprisingly, the duo hypocritically parroted the standard cliché talking points meant to incite fear over allowing student-athletes to profit from their own identity.
North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham spoke with Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports about his opposition to NIL after the news organization obtained a letter Cunningham wrote to the Uniform Law Commission expressing concerns over the latest NIL recommendations made by the NCAA’s Federal and State Legislation Working Group.
Within a week, Duke athletic director Kevin White released a statement in defense of his “colleague and friend” and echoed similar opposing viewpoints to NIL with concerns over its impacts on recruiting and non-revenue sports.
The concerns of the two athletic directors stem from the NCAA’s summersault on NIL in the past year after decades of vehemently opposing any form of compensation to athletes.
At this point, it’s impossible to tell whether their hypocrisy is willful or negligent. Regardless, the blue bloods’ stances display a complete lack of self-awareness at the very least.
