Bulldogs first to offer 2013 LB
While most students slept in on Monday, Cordova, Tenn., junior Walker Jones took advantage of his Columbus Day holiday out of school.
The 6-foot-2, 228-pound linebacker took an unofficial visit to Mississippi State and received a scholarship offer from head coach Dan Mullen in the process.
"I was just in a meeting with Coach Mullen and we were just talking," Jones said. "He was just talking about all the things that are happing with Mississippi State. He told me that I would have a scholarship to go there. He said that they couldn't send it officially until later and that it was a verbal. That was the first one. It was relieving just to know that it's going to be a reality of a dream."
Monday was Jones' first ever visit to Starkville and left impressed with what the Bulldogs had to offer. He also had a chance to meet with his recruiting coach and what would be his position coach at MSU.
"It was great," Jones said. "I visited all the facilities and got pretty much a complete campus tour. I saw the practice fields, the weight room and all that stuff. They informed me about all the new buildings being built so if I were to go there those would not be the facilities I would be using. I met with Coach Mullen, Coach (Angelo) Mirando and Coach (Geoff) Collins. I talked to all of them a pretty good bit."
Jones is the younger brother of Alabama junior offensive guard Barrett Jones and Crimson Tide redshirt freshman tight end Harrison Jones. Having both his older brothers go through the process has helped Jones get a jump start on his recruitment as well.
