Hokies latest to offer regional ATH
Virginia Tech is amongst the latest teams to pull the trigger on a major recruit in the mid-Atlantic. The Hokies put an offer on the table on Thursday for the 6-foot-0, 175-pound rising star.
"I found out I got an offer from Virginia Tech yesterday," Damascus, Md. athlete Brandon Phelps said. "The day before I got offered by Virginia."
What does Phelps think of his latest scholarships?
"I don't really know too much about Virginia Tech. My cousin lives in Roanoke and played in the state championship game at Tech. He said that the campus is nice and the stadium is really nice too. I haven't visited there yet, but I plan to make it."
Meanwhile, Phelps went on about a school he knows much more about, Virginia.
"That's pretty cool they offered and I was excited about that," he stated. "My parents went to school there and my dad played there. My dad told me about the tradition and about all the players and coaches. He talked about the stuff there is to do and places to eat and hang out. I visited there two to three weeks ago for junior day. I liked Coach London a lot. It seems like a good place."
While Phelps clearly likes the Cavaliers, he maintains he's open.
"It's a little too early to discuss favorites until I go out and visit all the places," he said. "Then I can narrow my list down and talk to my family and make a decision from there.
"Most important for me is a place I can get a good education and be successful in the world. I want to play football under a good coaching staff and with a good football program. Position doesn't matter, most colleges are looking at me as a cornerback."
Phelps has one unofficial visit set in the near future.
"I plan to go to Penn State next weekend for a practice," he said. "After that I'm going to go to a few spring games. I'm not sure where, but I'll definitely be at some."
The Maryland prospect posted 25 receptions and six touchdowns as a junior. He added two interceptions on defense as well.
