Audio & video: Coaches talk Duel at the DBAP
DURHAM — NC State head coach Elliott Avent and North Carolina counterpart Mike Fox were at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park this morning to announce their teams' special non-conference clash, which will take place on April 15 at 7:00 p.m.
Bulls' General Manager Mike Birling was also a part of the press conference, where the logo for the, "Duel at the DBAP" was also unveiled.
In a scheduling conflict which arose from conference expansion and is not expected to happen again, the ACC rivals were not scheduled to meet on the baseball diamond during this year's regular season. Last year, both programs reached the College World Series and the two squared off five times including the postseason, despite having one regular-season contest rained out. The overwhelming interest in the games last year, including an 18-inning epic at the DBAP which drew 11,392 fans during the ACC Tournament, made it necessary to get together for a non-conference battle this spring.
"We're excited for the opportunity to play in the Duel at the DBAP," Avent said. "Our players are thrilled, our fans have already marked it on their calendars, and we're looking forward to adding another chapter to this stories rivalry."
Both teams are expected to be among the nation's finest once again this year. The Wolfpack were ranked No. 10 nationally in Collegiate Baseball's Fabulous 40 NCAA Division I pre-season poll, while the Tar Heels checked in at No. 11.
NC State won a coin flip to earn the designation of playing as the home team, and they will play out of the first-base side dugout.
