NC State head coach Dave Doeren met with the media following practice on Wednesday night. It was the first day in full pads for NC State, but the big news of the day was the suspension of sophomore running back Shadrach Thornton for the season opener against Louisiana Tech following an offseason arrest.
"We've already issued a release on that," he said when asked about Thornton's punishment. "The things that we deal with on our team are in-house matters. The things that are public, you guys know about. The day of the incident we found out and did as much as we could to find out what was going on.
"The bottom line is he knows he made a mistake putting himself in that position. We handled it, removed him from all team activities except for academics. He had to live his life the way that he should live to my opinion or to his opinion until he could come back and exercise with the guys. That's where he is now. He's exercising with us, but the week of the event, we talked a lot and he won't play in the first game - that was decided a long time ago, regardless of the outcome of the court date.
"I think he has learned a lot, he'll grow a lot from it and that's part of our job as coaches - to discipline guys and help them through mistakes. He made one, he knows it and we're going to move forward from this point on."
