Kyle Washington became a small piece of history in the Mark Gottfried era at NC State Sunday. Gottfried is hoping though that he'll prove to be much more than that.
Washington, a 6-9, 215 pound power forward/center from Champlin, Minn., playing at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., verbally committed to the Wolfpack during his official visit this weekend. Washington had previously set up official trips to Washington, Ohio State and Iowa State and was also considering Louisville and Marquette.
Sources informed The Wolfpacker Sunday morning of Washington's commitment, and Brewster Academy head coach Jason Smith confirmed the news on Twitter.
Rivals.com ranks Washington as the No. 21 power forward and No. 96 recruit in the 2013 class, but his stock is on the rise. Washington, who has a 6-11 ? wingspan, was offered by NCSU in July.
Gottfried and assistant coach Orlando Early were on hand when Washington had nine points, 13 rebounds and five assists while helping the East squad at the Nike Global Challenge in Washington, D.C., July 12-15 to a 109-70 victory over China.
Washington attended St. Louis Park (Minn.) Benilde-St. Margaret's before leaving for Lakeville (Conn.) Hotchkiss School last year and reclassing to 2013. The added year has helped Washington get stronger physically and gain more confidence in his abilities.
He joins five-star point guard Anthony Barber of Hampton (Va.) High in the Pack's 2013 recruiting class.
The Wolfpacker will have more on Washington's commitment.
