August 18, 2011NC State has once again dipped into the in-state talent pool for a baseball commitment, and this time it's a familiar name to Wolfpack fans.
Left-handed pitcher Matt Tenuta from Apex (N.C.) High has been on State's radar since April when NC State offered him, and he decided Wednesday afternoon to commit to NCSU over UNC Wilmington and College of Charleston, thanks in large part to Elliott Avent and his staff at State.
"Once they offered me, I sat down with the coaches," Tenuta noted. "The coaching staff is a great bunch of guys, and to be honest I grew up and always wanted to play in the ACC. It just felt like the right fit."
The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder also played some first base and outfield for Apex, but he was recruited for his talent on the mound. He went 4-2 last year as a starter and also added three saves as a closer. He had a 3.10 ERA in 44 innings, striking out 48 batters and inducing a lot of ground balls during the process.
"My fastball is an upper-80s fastball, and I have a cutter," Tenuta noted. "That's my go-to pitch. My off-speed pitch is really my cutter. I mix those pitches pretty well with a curveball and change-up."
For his efforts, Tenuta was named honorable mention all-conference. He was also selected as a preseason Under Armour Underclassman All-American before the season started. He pitched this summer for the Carolina Cubs showcase baseball traveling squad.
Tenuta is the son of NC State linebackers coach Jon Tenuta, but the younger Tenuta said his father's job played a minor role at best in his decision.
"I've moved around in my life and been to a lot of different places in my life," Tenuta said. "I say the one thing that it did do was we were living here and I was so close to be able to go and visit the coaches and talk to them and get a feel for them. Otherwise it really didn't play too much into it."
